Welcome to Mr. Carnahan’s Second Grade classroom! This is a safe place for students to come learn about all of God’s creation through the various 2-10-16.2.JPGdisciplines. Second Grade is a year of impressive growth and development. Looking back on your child from August to February, and then at the end of May, you should be able to see noticeable improvements in their arithmetic, reading, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Many of the subjects are interdisciplinary in nature. You can expect your child to draw and color illustrations in Religion, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, and even Math! Stories incorporate Social Studies and Science Topics while the high expectations encourage the proper writing mechanics in classes like Social Studies and Science. The most valuable component of a Peace Lutheran education is the Christian focus that permeates each subject. The “One in Christ” materials, published by Concordia Publishing House, directly teaches lessons and stories of the Bible. All of the other subjects are also taught through our unique Christian lens. This allows us to bring the Christian ethos into all of the experiences throughout the Second Grade year!

2.1-21-16.2.JPGOur Second Grade math focuses on addition and subtraction. By looking at a variety of strategies and models to use, students are nurtured into a more comprehensive understanding of these two fundamental arithmetic functions. We utilize Pearson’s Envision Math 2.0.

Language Arts is taught through Pearson’s Reading Street. This multi-faceted resources works to develop all of your child’s language skills, including spelling, writing, reading, comprehension, and more.

Harcourt Science and MacMillan/McGraw-Hill’s “We Live Together” Social Studies books allow us to take more detailed looks at the world God has blessed us with. We also like to have a little fun and allow our creative side out when we can. We enjoy making simple crafts and learning new games, even dance moves, throughout the year. The wealth of knowledge and skills your child will develop this year are essential to their continued success as they look forward to being Third Grade Bobcats!2.1-22-16 cropped.jpg
